We believed that study tools shouldn't carry a price tag that gates your grades. Too often, students are forced to choose between paying for premium subscriptions or manually writing out definitions, notes, and outlines. This economic barrier makes learning harder for those who need it most.
Our mission is to democratize digital learning. By building a browser-first, multi-page web application with no account database, we put you in charge of your own data and model access. Using the Google Gemini API with your own key means you get high-fidelity visual cards and textbook summarizations without Open Study Deck standing between you and the model. There are no registration forms and no Open Study Deck subscription popups interrupting your study flow.
By offering a completely free alternative to AI study apps, we hope to build a workspace where any student can study effectively. "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) is a developer-centric architectural approach that we brought to the student community. When standard applications host API keys, they have to pay for server hosting, database maintenance, and cloud bandwidth. To cover these costs and make a profit, they charge users a monthly markup. BYOK eliminates the middleman. You grab a free API key from Google AI Studio, save it in your browser settings, and make queries directly to Google. This keeps our platform free to use, passing all savings directly to you.
This model also makes Open Study Deck a privacy-conscious ai flashcard generator. Other platforms require you to upload your lecture files and screenshots to their own servers, where they store and sometimes analyze your data for their own purposes. Open Study Deck doesn't have a login database or a sync server, and it only runs Google Analytics if you explicitly allow it — see the consent banner and Privacy Policy for details. The interface runs in your browser, and your notes, images, and generated decks stay in your browser's local storage. To generate a card, the content you submit is sent either directly from your browser to Google Gemini (BYOK) or through Open Study Deck's protected guest gateway to Gemini (Guest Access) — that request is how the AI analysis happens, and Open Study Deck does not retain your study content or generated decks on its own servers in either case.
By default, your key is kept in your browser's session storage for the current tab. If you check "Remember this key on this device," it's saved in local storage instead so you don't need to re-enter it on your next visit — only enable that on a device you trust. Either way, queries are sent via encrypted HTTPS connections directly to Google's models, and Open Study Deck has no backend that receives or records your key or study documents.
