In both modes there are no login forms and no subscription plans, and Open Study Deck does not retain your study content, generated decks, or (in BYOK mode) your API key on its own servers. Open Study Deck uses consent-based Google Analytics to understand aggregate feature usage — it only loads if you allow it, and study content, generated answers, and API keys are never sent as analytics data. How do I get a free Gemini API Key?

Can I use the same API key across my phone and laptop?
Yes. The same Google Gemini API key works across your laptop, tablet, and mobile phone. Because Open Study Deck does not host your credentials in a cloud database, there is no account to sync — you'll need to copy and paste the key into the Settings tab of each individual web browser you use.
When will I be asked to re-enter my API key?

Is my API key safe? Can you see or steal my key?
In BYOK mode, your key never touches an Open Study Deck server — it lives in your browser's session or local storage and is used to query Google's APIs directly over encrypted HTTPS. In Guest Access, there is no personal key at all; requests use a shared credential held only in Open Study Deck's server-side configuration, which the browser never receives. As with any browser-stored secret, keep in mind that browser extensions or scripts running on a compromised device could technically read a BYOK key — only enable "Remember this key" on a device you trust.
Does Open Study Deck use Google Analytics?
Yes, but only with your permission. Open Study Deck uses consent-based Google Analytics to understand aggregate feature usage, such as which study modes are popular and whether generations succeed — this helps us improve the product. The Analytics script is not requested until you click "Allow Analytics" on the consent banner; declining (or ignoring it) means nothing loads and nothing is sent. We never send your study content, generated answers, filenames, deck titles, subject context, or API keys as analytics data. You can change your decision anytime via the "Analytics Preferences" link in the footer.
What happens to the photos of my notes or textbooks?
Textbook screenshots and photos of lecture notes are sent over HTTPS to Google Gemini for analysis — that's how the AI reads and summarizes them. In BYOK mode this goes directly from your browser to Google. In Guest Access it passes through Open Study Deck's Cloudflare Function on the way to Google. In both cases Open Study Deck does not store or cache your images in a database of its own. Once the response comes back, the generated card is rendered and stored only in your browser.

Guest Access has a modest daily generation limit (shown above the generate button) to keep the free shared service usable for everyone. In BYOK mode, Open Study Deck itself imposes no daily cap or subscription limit — your usage is instead subject to the model availability, quota, rate limits, and billing configuration of your own Google AI project. Check your project's dashboard in Google AI Studio for your current BYOK limits.
Can I save my study cards to my phone gallery?
